Canada Post to the Rescue!  Write Here Write Now

You know the feeling. You open your mailbox with a sliver of hope – maybe today there’ll be something special in there.  You’re greeted instead by a pile of advertising brochures, tax statements, and worse: bills to pay.  Once or twice a year, around your birthday and December holidays, handwritten cards may appear.  Some are as bad as bills, Hallmark cards personalized only with Dear You, and ending with Love, Us.   If your name is common enough, you could swap your card with your neighbor’s and no one would be the wiser.

Due to Covid-19, people aren’t traveling much these days, but imagine the thrill of a postcard from Rome, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Mayan ruins in Mexico.  Heck, even a card from Florida would suffice.  I’d put it up on my wall or refrigerator, and every time I looked at it my heart would sing.

It’s always the right time to make someone’s day

Well, Canada Post has the cure for what ails us.  They started a campaign they named Write Here Write Now, with the slogan, “It’s always the right time to make someone’s day.”  To make it easy, they’ve delivered prepaid postcards to every Canadian household. Yes!  The cards are already stamped, shattering the final barrier to reaching out to someone.  Each card contains a message in both English and French, in six versions:  I’ve been meaning to write, I miss you, From me to you, Sending smiles, Sending hugs, and the one I like the best:  Wishing I were there.

If you want to get more creative, there’s an option of creating your own stamp “with a favourite photo or art work.”  I love the spelling of favorite, with an extra ‘u.’

My Resolution

The campaign has certainly inspired me!  I saved all the holiday greeting cards that came in last December, and have started replying to each one with a personal letter of my own, responding to the news they shared and updating folks on what’s been going on in my life since we last spoke.  I’ll have to spring for my own stamps, but hey, even Canada Post delivered only postcards.

Thanks, Canada Post – you’re on to something big.  And to quote you, all you need is a stamp, an envelope, an address, a mailbox and “Whoosh!  Your letter is on its way.”
